J is for Jettison

Close your eyes a minute and picture something being jettisoned. Is it garbage being launched into a star before a ship jumps to warp speed? Even if you don’t imagine something that dramatic, chances are it’s something related to junk being discarded to make systems run smoothly.

Doing this in our lives is just as valuable. We often hold on to old habits, thoughts, and routines that no longer serve us. This weight holds us back, takes up time and mental energy. Pay attention to where you pay attention – what doesn’t serve you any more?

Can you free up tasks by hiring a specialist or promoting your child? I really dislike folding laundry – there are times I wish I had a kid to do this for me! If you can afford a housekeeper or yard service to free up time better spent elsewhere, then let those chores go.

Changing habits and routines can take more time and effort. Be patient with yourself, it took time to develop the habit, it will take time to change them too. Who can help break it? Is it a friend you can check in with? If you’re trying to reduce time online, there are apps and browser extensions to help you. Changing my phone to black and white mode greatly reduced my time on it! Usually this an option in Accessibility settings.

Decluttering can also be a huge boost. Take the time to clean out closets, kitchen cabinets, and gasp – the garage! Donate items to those who can use them or have a yard sale if you need the extra money. Who knows what long lost item you’ll find in the back of your closet!

Even if you do not Bullet Journal, I encourage you to write down your reflections. Physically writing on paper encourages deeper thought and longer memory retention. Slowing down is the feature.
